Oat Flour Gluten Free Sourdough Starter Culture
This is a really great starter, but we won’t pretend that it isn’t incredibly smelly. Really, really smelly. Awful starter scent aside, it makes wonderful breads! Our favorite thing to do with this is to make oat farls! We also add this starter to wheat breads, because it really enriches the flavor.

(UPDATED) STILL CHILD APPROVED!
Child Tester does not want to be in the house while this is being used, but she demands to be present when the breads are ready to eat! Because of the smell, she gives this starter ONE THUMB UP!!
(UPDATED) CHILD APPROVED!
She really, really did not want to test the oat cakes we made for her during less… successful experiments, but we finally got a batch of bread she liked! She told us that the starter isn’t so bad after all, and that as long as the jam is flowing, she’ll keep eating the oat cakes, giving it ONE THUMB UP!!
CHILD DISAPPROVED!
It was really hard to get our child tester to even nibble the breads we’ve tried to make with this. Mainly because of the smell. We really couldn’t blame her for her resistance, because this starter has a smell only a mother could love. When we reminded her that she gets paid to review products, she tasted the bread, gave it a resounding TWO THUMBS DOWN!!, and asked for milk and salami to get the taste out of her mouth. She was clearly being melodramatic at this point, because although these bannock still don’t taste or feel exactly like they do in my head, they do not taste like the starter smells.
